Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about the Claude Certified Architect – Foundations certification, from exam format to preparation strategies.
12 questions answeredIt is Anthropic's first official technical certification designed for solution architects building production applications with Claude. It validates your ability to design agentic systems, integrate tools via MCP, configure Claude Code, apply prompt engineering patterns, and manage context in production environments.
The certification is designed for solution architects, AI engineers, and technical professionals who build production applications with Claude. It is NOT a general-use or casual-user credential — it focuses on real deployment, implementation design, and architecture decisions.
The exam is multiple choice with scenario-based questions. You are presented with 4 of 6 possible scenarios, each testing different aspects of Claude architecture. The passing score is 720 out of 1000.
Currently, the certification is free for the first 5,000 partner company employees. It launched alongside the Claude Partner Network and is initially available to Anthropic partners.
At launch, the certification is primarily available through the Claude Partner Network. Anthropic has confirmed partner availability, and broader public access may come later. You can request access through the Anthropic Skilljar portal.
The five domains are: (1) Agentic Architecture & Orchestration (~25%), (2) Tool Design & MCP Integration (~20%), (3) Claude Code Configuration & Workflows (~20%), (4) Prompt Engineering & Structured Output (~20%), and (5) Context Management & Reliability (~15%).
The scenarios are: (1) Customer Support Resolution Agent, (2) Code Generation with Claude Code, (3) Multi-Agent Research System, (4) Developer Productivity with Claude, (5) Claude Code for CI/CD, and (6) Structured Data Extraction. You'll be tested on 4 of these 6, randomly selected.
We recommend a 12-week study plan at approximately 1 hour per day. The plan is divided into three phases: Foundations (weeks 1-4), Applied Knowledge (weeks 5-8), and Context & Reliability + Exam Prep (weeks 9-12).
Key resources include the official Exam Guide PDF from Anthropic, the Anthropic Academy courses on Skilljar, Anthropic's open-source courses on GitHub, and the official Claude documentation. Our study guide on this site organizes all of these into a structured learning path.
Key anti-patterns include: parsing natural language for loop termination (use stop_reason), prompt-based enforcement for critical business rules (use programmatic hooks), same-session self-review (use separate sessions), too many tools per agent (keep to 4-5), and aggregate accuracy metrics masking per-document-type failures.
No, the exam is entirely multiple choice. However, you need to deeply understand code patterns, API calls, configuration files, and architectural decisions. You are designing systems the code runs on, not writing the code itself during the exam.
You need a minimum score of 720 out of 1000 to pass the Claude Certified Architect – Foundations exam.
